R.M. Schindler, Architect

Albert Van Dekker Residence, 1940
19950 Collier St, Woodland Hills, CA 91364

Preserved in time in Woodland Hills south of Ventura Boulevard, this time capsule of “Space Architecture” remains intact in virtually original condition, untouched but for the ravages of the elements.  One of the architect’s largest homes, built for an early Hollywood actor and his family, a rustic country house executed in a sophisticated modern vocabulary.  Here Schindler departs from the language of flat roofs and plaster skin, introducing asymmetrical copper-clad gables, exposed wood interiors, blue-green flagstone patios and fireplace inglenooks in a nod toward Wright’s Taliesin West.  The forward-looking genius of the design is evinced by tightly interlocking volumes, folded planes, butt-glazed corners, sloping walls and ceilings, polygonal windows  – ahead of its time seventy years later.  This magnificent home awaits the restoring hands of a kind steward to preserve this historic resource for future generations.  4 BR, 3 BA, 2,500 SF on almost half an acre.
