Finn Kappe Architect

Kappe Residence, 1995
2255 N Topanga Cnyn Blvd, Topanga CA 90290

Resting gently on its acre-and-a-half site in the hills of Topanga, the architect’s home is a study in contradictions: rural yet urban, modern yet romantic, formal yet informal. The U-shaped plan embraces the rugged beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains and respectful placement on the site preserves the natural topography, while the masonry walls, structural steel and concrete floors put forth a more streetwise aesthetic. Similarly, a visible system of architectural rules, modules and proportions is indicative of the logic of form and function, yet the conscious release from these constraints, a perceptual tear in the fabric of this system, allows a more intuitive thought process to flow. An open plan is organized around a two-story living, dining, kitchen area with a loft-like master bedroom and redwood bridge above, softened by large walls of glass and abundant natural light. A second wing holds additional bedrooms and a separate studio, ideal for long-term guests. Large outdoor decks, an interior courtyard and mature native plants provide a harmonious dialogue between natural and built environments.
